What is the ACM?

ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, is an international scientific and educational organization dedicated to advancing the arts, sciences, and applications of information technology. With a world-wide membership of 80,000, ACM functions as a locus for computing professionals and students working in the various fields of Information Technology.

What is SIGSAC?

The ACM Special Interest Group on Security, Audit and Control addresses all activities involved with maintaining and protecting computers and their programs, focusing on the architectural foundation of secure systems. SIGSAC is involved with the development of computer security standards. As sponsor or co-sponsor of a number of conferences and workshops, including the Conference on Computers, Freedom and Privacy, the ACM Conference on Computers and Communications Security and the New Security Paradigms workshop, SIGSAC is an active participant in addressing significant issues in the field. SIGSAC News

Teh Big W1nner

Faculty advisor, MAJ TJ OConnor, just brought home a 1st Place Victory from the National Defense University's 1st Cyber Challenge. He was teamed with a new friend from Fort Meade. MAJ OConnor competed against some top talent from our various intelligence agencies and cyberwarfare units to earn top honors.

Mike Kershaw (KismetWireless) Visits

Mike Kershaw from Kismet Wireless just visited and talked. His slides are linked to his website above. What a visit! I think everybody is afraid to use the internet now. Some great highlights to think about are listed below. We are scared.

  1. Domain Name System Forgery over WiFi
  2. Malicious Javascript that calls back from a corporate network injected by WiFi
  3. ZigBee Controlled dams vulnerable to replay attacks

Hacking 101

The Hacking 101 class was a huge success! Congrats to everybody who compromised another machine! We had books set aside for success attacks and ran out! Wow! Slides are here (internal link only) Next up, wireless hacking and BBQ with the author of L0phtcrack.

Congrats on the CyberDawn 3rd Place! See the photo tab for more pictures!

Well on our way to EOF

Wow! This year has been going by fast already! The GoogleHack was a huge success, developing lots of good intel on an Army Base. Next, the CyberDawn trip resulted in a great victory for everyone that made it to Maryland. And Bruce Potter's recent talk was amazing for everyone that got to hear him speak about trusted computing. Next up, Hacking 101 - more to follow as Alan sets a date. Also, we'll be doing some wireless pentesting and recon here shortly as well. Let Alan know if you are interested in participating! Thanks.

Start of a New Year

We are shaping up for a really exciting year in SIGSAC. The club officers have been hard at work lining up trips, speakers, and competitions throughput the year. Some of the exciting talks will be Dragorn (Author of Kismet), and Bruce Potter (ShmooCon Organizer). Whats really exciting this year is the release of the ULTIMATE HACKER. The Ultimate Hacker is a new challenge, where cadets can compete in information security competitions for prizes. Read about it more at Ultimate Hacker. Lots of trips are in the works, including a visit to the National Security Agency, ShmooCon Hacker Conference, and a trip to the FBI Forensics Lab. Stay tuned and visit back often.

How to join Army SIGSAC

Cadets

Joining army SIGSAC is easy. Just send an email to the CIC, Cadet Alan Lewis and express your interest. We will add you to our mailing list and you will receive news about the group and the latest news about the Information Assurance, Information Warfare and Computer Security fields. You may optionally join the national level ACM/SIGSAC (see the sidebar) although this is not required to participate in our activities.

Faculty

We are always looking for faculty to participate in SIGSAC. You do not need to be a member of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Information Warfare cuts across a broad spectrum of disciplines beyond computer science.
