Previous Events

Cyber Defense Exercise (19-23 April 2010)

The Cyber Defense Exercise is from 19-23 April this year and is an exciting event for cadets to test their cyber skills against the National Security Agency's best. See Cadet Alan Lewis to volunteer about how you can get in the fight!

Travis Goodspeed (24 March 2010)

Travis, a legendary reverse engineer, will talk to the cadets about the methodology he uses. Also, he has a challenge for all those that attend.

Upcoming Events

This semester (Spring 2010), we are planning some exciting events. They include but are not limited to:

Previous Events

ShmooCon 2010 (Done)

A small crew survived snowpocalypse in DC to attend ShmooCon, where cadets gave two talks:.
See the ShmooCon Website for more details.

Kismet Wireless Toolkit - Dragorn - 13 Nov 09.

Mike Kershaw (Dragorn) will talk about the Kismet Wireless Project. Kismet is an 802.11 layer2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion detection system. His talk will have lots of hands-on wireless network detection and sniffing.

Lan Party (Hack or Halo) - 14 Nov 09

Another LAN party with more games and fun!

BBQ with Mudge - 14 Nov 09

BBQ with lead author of l0phtcrack and legend Mudge from the L0pht. Talk to Alan if you want to attend. Limited spots!

Trusted Computing - B. Potter - 09 Oct 09.

Bruce Potter, security expert from the Shmoo Group will talk about the Shmoo Group. In addition to running the best east-cost hacker conference every year - The Shmoo Group is a non-profit think-tank comprised of security professionals from around the world who donate their free time and energy to information security research and development. Mr Potter's talk will examine the history of trusted computing. Then, using the backdrop of the current state of the attack space, this presentation will discuss why the current trend of defensive technologies (such as firewalls, proxies, host based security, and policy engines) is unlikely to stop attackers. Finally, we will examine the current state of initiatives such as the Trusted Computing Group and discuss high assurance technologies that may be of use to developers in the next 3-5 years.

Lan Party (Hack or Halo) - 19 Sept 09

We'll have video games setup on the local area network (LAN) with plenty of games, pizza, and a fun time for all.

Google Hacking - 12 Sept 09.

The Google Search engine crawls across the entire internet every couple of months, touching every webpage in its path. During this talk, learn how hackers use google to break into networks, web cameras, and even your printer! Those cadets that attend this talk will be eligible to attend the Google Penetration test, where they get to hack a live military target using Google. There will be lots of Pizza and prizes as well!

Trips

CyberDawn - 03-04 Oct 09

First trip section of the year, we'll head down to Virgina and compete in WhiteWolf's CyberDawn! A chance for some of the club members to display their skills and others to learn. Should be fund for all. Send Cadet Captain Nate Grunzweig an email if you are interested.

NSA Cyber Command Trip

This two-day trip to the NSA is an awesome opportunity to go inside the National Security Agency. SIGSAC cadets will be briefed by some of the most senior NSA leaders and receive tours in a variety of sensitive programs. Sunday involved travel to the Fort Meade area and free time in the Inner Harbor area of Baltimore. Typicall, we have 30 slots, so express your interest early on the sign-up page. NSA has invited us back in the Fall. See MAJ Ben Sangster for more information.

ShmooCon Hacker Conference

ShmooCon is an annual East coast hacker convention hell-bent on offering three days of an interesting atmosphere for demonstrating technology exploitation, inventive software & hardware solutions, and open discussions of critical infosec issues. Those on the trip section get to stay near DC's inner harbor and enjoy some time learning new hacker skills.

Competitions

Capture the Flag! - TBD Nov 09

During Capture the Flag, cadets compete against each other in an all out cyber-war using different hacking techniques learned throughout the club. Each team is composed of different classes, levels of skill, and a faculty member. Last year's CTF Exercise was a lot of fun as a red team element of faculty also hacked the cadets from next door.

Google Pentest. - 12 Sept 09

During the Google penetration test, cadets get to actually hack a live military installation using different google hacking techniques. This year's target has already been selected. We think everyone will be excited about the target this year. More to follow.

Wireless War Driving Exercise - Spring 10

Every wonder how hackers war-drive and find wireless networks and devices? By the end of this exercise, you will know how they do it and how to prevent your wireless communications from attackers!

NSA Cyber Defense Exercise - Spring 10

Every year the NSA holds a competition to see which service academy has the best network defense skills. The past three years, West Point has won hands-down. The SIGSAC helps the firsties in CS482 compete. SIGSAC members Alex Eubanks, Mike Weigand, Stephen Roy, Peter Hudelson, and Easton Ring all helped earn the victory for the cadets!
