Overview
In
2001 the teams at each academy were given a ten-day window to
"secure the net" before the red teams initiated their
attacks. The Red Team accessed the networks at each academy through
a virtual private network (VPN).
The
exercise was conducted during the period 21 April through 11 May
2001. During the execution phase of the exercise, the NSA-lead
red team used commercial tools and a vast array of both well-known
and little-known attacks against the Cyber Defense Networks at
each academy.
After a week of attacks and subsequent evaluations, the USMA Black
Knights were deemed the team with the strongest security posture
and were declare winner of the highly coveted NSA Information
Assurance Director's Trophy.
In May 2001, Mr. Michael Jacobs, the NSA Information Assurance
(IA) Director, presented the trophy to BG Daniel J. Kaufman, Dean
of the Academic Board.
